I created this to be used during Senior Social, a quarterly event that gives senior-level members a chance to socialize and enjoy a morning at the museum.

Dinosaur Discover Event

The Morian Hall of Paleontology is packed with prehistoric beasts and contains dinosaurs in action –chasing, eating, and escaping as they struggle for life. After exploring our in-house dinosaurs, embark on a global adventure of science and discovery in DINOSAURS ALIVE! Come and witness the earliest dinosaurs of the Triassic Period to the monsters of the Cretaceous “reincarnated” life-sized for the giant screen during our Day Dinosaur Discovery event.

Calling all Members!

School is out, and summer is upon us. But with rainy days and the Texas heat beating down on us, a day in is the only thing that comes to mind. That, and a nice tall glass of iced tea. But don’t let the heat ruin your craving for a day out. Join us at HMNS for a morning with Bucky and his other dino pals, or spend an afternoon with Charro and his butterfly neighbors. You might even catch him out and about on the museum lawn catching some sun.

HMNS contains history and information for all ages to enjoy. Have the little ones enjoy some hands-on fun in our Block Party Exhibit while you take a breather or two. Watch as they build castles to conquer, jets that soar, and skyscrapers that tower over imaginary cities—a perfect spot to entertain the kids and rest your feet.

The combinations are endless, and perhaps an evening in our newly renovated Burke Baker Planetarium is number one on your summer list of fun. Escape the heat and enjoy a trip to the stars without leaving the inner loop. With an extra hour of museum time, open until 6 pm, relax, and don’t let the heat ruin your weekend fun. Instead, join your HMNS family and come where history is alive.

Cohesive Series

For the final assignment, we were to shoot a series of 10 images that were connected in some way. It was a challenge, but each image could be taken in anyway we wanted and there were no limits, aside from it being cohesive.

I decided to break my 10 images into a series of my home and my home away from home. The 5 photos on the left are images that I shot at my childhood home and the images on the right are in my current apartment.

HMNS- Birthday Parties

I’ve been working at The Houston Museum of Natural Science for two years as a Birthday Party Coordinator. (I worked as a Birthday Party Coordinator from 2014 to 2016.) I am part of the Party Smarty Crew, and we each run several parties throughout the weekend. As the party coordinator, I make sure the room is party-ready by decorating it in the selected colors. I make sure the birthday child and parents have what they need and ensure the party is running as smoothly as possible.

Party themes:

  • Dino
  • Butterfly
  • Astronomy
  • Egypt
  • Wildlife

After I have escorted and helped the birthday family to their party room and set up any food or other decorations, they have brought. I alert my supervisors of any expected deliveries. After some time, we usually start with a specific craft that goes with the party’s theme. My favorite party theme is dinosaurs. A dino party means I give the party a tour of our paleontology hall. After the tour, we return to the party room for cake. I assist with keeping sticky fingers off the cake until after we sing Happy Birthday and then help with cutting and serving.

Occasionally, I work as a supervisor, and my responsibilities change from running the party to making sure the other coordinators have everything they need. In this situation, I would then run and get any deliveries or items the coordinator might need.

Photography Class- Assignment 3

Diptych

For this assignment, I was instructed to create two diptychs with two separate images as a complementary pair. A diptych creates or implies a relationship to form one single artistic statement.

For my first diptych, I went with secrets as my theme. I tried to make the images almost touch by having the lock off centered towards the right and having my model framed more towards the left side of frame.

For the second one, I was trying to show how social media has taken us captive in a way. We are all focused on liking, tagging, checking into life’s moments and not always enjoying a moment even though they are fleeting. I myself enjoy my social networks, but unplugging a bit from time to time can’t hurt. Keeps you grounded.  I used another ball joint object, this time being a hand. I wanted it to be puppet like to further get the message across. In the partner image, I went with a cord wrapped around an image cut out of the earth to again, further explain, my message. I like how the shadow came out in the image of the hand.

Blogging for Books- KoreaTown

Usually, cookbooks are not on my list of books to browse through when I go into a bookstore unless I’m just looking at pictures. I struggle with following recipes because I am a very impatient person and tend to get ahead of myself. But my sister, Kat, is a chef and she is fascinated with Korean cuisine. I figured I would get a cookbook for her and this one seemed interesting, plus, I LOVE food!

Koreatown by chef Deuki Hong and writer Matt Rodbard

I may not be a chef, but this book is beautifully made, and it offers the reader a look into Korean culture when it comes to the food. The cover jumped out at me, and its texture is smooth with the title embossed. I love when books have an added texture to it. I’m not quite sure what type of paper was used, but it’s smooth and soft without having a gloss to it even though it looks glossy. It’s wonderful.

The book is separated into different sections and offers the reader interviews and tips when it comes to recreating different Korean dishes. It’s filled with gorgeous photography that captured moments of food bliss, and if they don’t make your mouth water, I don’t know what will My favorite thing about cookbooks, when I look at one, is how the pictures look. I like to know how the dish I’m preparing is supposed to look especially if it’s from a specific type of cuisine.

The layout of the recipes is displayed with your ingredients on either the left or right side of the page in a column. It shows you precisely what you will need and the amount of each ingredient. Each recipe gives advice on the ingredients you will be using, such as what to keep in mind when choosing the type of vegetable, etc. Very helpful for people like me, who know nothing about produce or anything involving food. Aside from eating it.
I’ve already flagged all of the recipes I want to try first, so here’s hoping the roomie will assist in the actual making of the dish. But for those of you who lack having access to a real chef worry not, the book lays out the instructions in an easy to follow manner. I believe even I could follow it.

Photography Class-Assignment 2

Constructed Realities

For the second assignment, my teacher had us take 4 images with the idea of a constructed reality, something that we created specifically for the camera to shoot. Imagine or recreate a story, scene, painting, or an event and stage it with the appropriate “actors” or figures, costumes, objects, images, lighting, ect.

For my 4 images I decided to recreate fairy tale characters, each one inspired a bit by Disney’s portrayal. I am a huge fan of Disney and had a lot of fun creating each Princess. I used a ball-joint doll as my “model” and hand made their dresses and yarn wigs. I put together a background for each model that I felt represented each model’s story. All in all, it was an assignment I enjoyed immensely.

Blogging for Books- POP PAINTING

I want to start this review by saying, this book is gorgeous! Camilla d’errico is an unbelievable artist.

Her twist on surrealism is just breathtaking. I love how she adds animals, food, or even the look of elements to her paintings. The color of the cover pops at you, which would make this book the perfect companion for any coffee table. The girls in her paintings each have her signature pouty lips and textured hair. And she explains her techniques in such a way, you may not be able to mimic fully, but you may even discover your technique in the process.

“You are born an original, so don’t die a copy.”- Camilla d’errico

She offers the reader tips and answers questions you may have concerning tools and materials. Helpful for anyone aspiring to paint or anyone interested in the topic of painting. The book is broken into two parts and then into different chapters that concentrate on certain areas such as sketching, blending, composition, etc. In my opinion, this would better assist someone who has some beginners knowledge in drawing or painting. But don’t let that deter you from testing out her advice even with no arty knowledge.

Photography Class- Assignment 1

Camera Basics

For my last semester at the University of Houston, I decided to take an intro photography class. Photography has always been something I have wanted to learn, aside from instagram photos of books, I wanted to learn a few basics to get me started with digital photography. I used a DLSR Rebel Cannon in all of these photos. I am very pleased with the knowledge I was able to learn during my last semester at UH. For the first assignment, we were supposed to learn the basics of capturing a photo with perfect exposures. Learning how to manually change the shutter speed and the aperture, these are only a few of the photos I took for the assignment.
